Following the death of Robert and Renly, the only surviving members of House Baratheon are Stannis, his wife, and his daughter Shireen. Introduced in 1996's A Game of Thrones, Robert is the eldest son and heir of Lord Steffon Baratheon. He is a close friend to Ned Stark, both being wards of Lord Jon Arryn. After his betrothed Lyanna Stark was allegedly kidnapped by prince Rhaegar Targaryen, Robert, Ned and Jon started a rebellion against the "Mad King" Aerys II Targaryen. After crushing the Targaryen dynasty and winning the war, during which Lyanna died, Robert took the Iron Throne. He married Tywin Lannister's daughter Cersei to ensure political stability.

After Aerys’s murder at the hands of Ser Jaime Lannister, Robert Baratheon becomes the seventeenth ruler of the seven kingdoms, and is named King Robert I Baratheon. He chose Jon Arryn to become his Hand, and at his advice, and after Lyanna’s death he married Cersei Lannister, forging a bond with House Lannister. He also spared many loyalists of House Targaryen, including Barristan Selmy and Lord Varys. He made Varys the master of whisperers and Petyr Baelish the master of coin. After becoming King, he handed the Stormlands to his youngest brother, Renly, instead of Stannis, who was the rightful heir. He instead made Stannis Lord of Dragonstone, and Master of Ships on Robert’s small council.
After Tywin delivered Elia and her children’s bodies, Eddard requested that the Lannister pay for their crime. Back in his early days, Robert used a Warhammer, and was regarded as a mighty warrior. Despite this, Robert still refuses to let Cersei hurt him after a fight between Ned and her brother Jaime over the arrest of her other brother Tyrion. Meanwhile, Eddard keeps investigating the death of Jon Arryn and realizes the former Hand was checking the lineage records before dying under mysterious circumstances. Eddard learns that Cersei’s children got fathered by her brother, Jaime.
